Unless you’re a world-class sport climber (though possibly not even then), you can’t do what Chris Sharma does. But thanks in part to a new rich media project created by filmmaker Josh Lowell and photographer Corey Rich, you are now closer than ever to understanding why.

Sharma, age 26, is generally recognized as the best climber in the world, the king of the king line. “I’ve always been dreaming of finding the biggest, most badass line you can imagine,” he says. “The line that’s just calling out to you, beckoning to be climbed. That’s the king line.”

And for the past decade, Sharma has traveled the world chasing that line, living out of a backpack, cars on two continents, hotels, and the houses of friends, with very occasional stops home in Santa Cruz, CA. In his pursuit he has redefined sport climbing, bouldering, and deep-water soloing by relentlessly attempting “unclimbable” lines and frequently, impossibly, climbing them.

To capture Sharma’s quest, Lowell, his brother Brett, and co-producer Peter Mortimer, worked closely with Sharma for nearly two years, documenting some of his most impressive ascents in the movie “King Lines,” an independent film (now also on DVD) that has played recently to packed theatres of climbing enthusiasts. The film, shot in HD and cut on a Mac running Final Cut Pro, follows Sharma to spectacular locations “covering all different styles of climbing on all kinds of rocks and environments,” says Lowell. Rich’s still photo coverage of some of the same efforts — downloaded and edited on location on MacBook Pros running Aperture — have appeared in Climbing magazine, the bible of the sport.

But to tell Sharma’s story outside the closed circle of climbing enthusiasts, Lowell and Rich decided to collaborate on a mixed media project that would combine the best of each of their digital assets — video, still images, sound — and take the story of Sharma’s vertical exploits horizontal.

“Josh and I are really good at touching that inside-the-game audience,” says Rich. “Our goal with this rich media profile of Chris Sharma is to broaden the scope of our audience so that my mom can watch this piece and sort of get a better feel for who Chris is and what he does and why his life is special.”

Sharmic Karma

Neither Lowell nor Rich doubted that Sharma’s story would carry to a broader audience. Raised a Buddhist in Santa Cruz and discovered as a climbing prodigy at age 14, the freakishly strong, spiritually centered Sharma was seemingly born to the task of finding the toughest way up in a sport notorious for taking down even its best athletes — daily on the face of impassable rocks, or over the course of a career through physical injury and psychological burnout.

“It’s pretty much accepted that he’s the strongest climber in the world,” says Lowell, “known for just phenomenal strength and phenomenal flow in his climbing, but also for single-mindedly pursuing climbs. Sometimes he’s made 6 trips back to his objective over the course of a couple of years, eventually climbing one route that redefines the difficulty for that style of climbing.”

Sharma’s preternatural abilities are fully enhanced by his Zen-infused attitude, which has not hindered his ascension as a literal rock star. “He’s very charismatic, with a laid back attitude that’s unusual for top athletes,” says Lowell. “He’s known for not really having a rigorous training routine. When he talks about climbing he talks about having fun and pursuing your passion and being true to yourself rather than succeed, succeed, succeed. His Zen approach to life and climbing has made him iconic within the sport. People really admire his outlook.”

Friends in High Places

Capturing high-end video, audio, and stills to feed their rich media project required the absolute cooperation of Sharma, with whom Lowell and Rich have enjoyed a long working relationship, as well as some Sharma-like physical adjustments by the crew.

“We’re in an environment that inherently is very challenging to operate in, oftentimes dangling from a rope on a cliff, sometimes after enormous physical exertion to even get to the location,” says Rich. “So it’s not quite as simple as just making great video or great pictures.”

And even arriving at those optimal precarious shooting and recording positions can be logistically difficult for both crew and climber. “If we got up at midnight, Chris also got up at midnight,” says Rich. “If we’re going to hike six miles in the dark, he’s also going to hike six miles in the dark.”

And because he is the generally the sole star of the production, it was on Sharma not only to climb virtually impassable routes but, in a more practical sense, to hit his marks. “For lack of a better example, we’re working with the Michael Jordan of rock climbing,” says Rich. “And we’re asking Chris to perform a slam dunk over and over again at the absolute highest level, jumping to the rim at the limit of where man is capable of doing it. And he’s doing it with cameras rolling.”

Lowell, who’s been making films with Sharma since he was a 15-year-old phenom, says that they learned together over the years how to how to make Sharma’s exploits translate onto the screen: “Climbing can be really spectacular visually, but also it’s a quite subtle sport. It’s not necessarily as easy to understand as say a skier flying off a hundred-foot cliff or a Motocross guy doing a back flip.”

To bring the story out, Lowell depends on the naturally articulate Sharma to describe what is going through his mind. He also worries the details of ambient sound capture. “It’s important that we get really good audio so that we can hear the fingernails scratching behind the flake of rock trying to get a purchase.”

And given the goal of reaching out to a broader audience, Lowell felt it was important as well to capture another side of Sharma’s world. “Climbing’s really a lifestyle sport like surfing,” says Lowell. “It’s about beautiful places, traveling, having adventures, meeting fascinating people from different cultures. It’s one thing if Chris just goes and climbs something; it’s another story when he puts in that extra work so he can share that experience with people all over the world who are maybe watching at home or checking the web during a work break, dreaming along with him.”

Mac Ascendant

Besides making the logistical and creative adjustments required to shoot Sharma at work, Lowell and Rich needed to establish field workflows that allowed them to efficiently complete their own.

For Lowell that meant shooting in HD video entirely on the Panasonic HVX200, a camera that records HD video onto P2 cards. After each shoot, he’d capture and log all the day’s footage in the field on a laptop running Final Cut Pro and dupe the files onto multiple FireWire drives. “Some times we do rough cuts at night to figure out which angles or which aspects of the story we need to cover the following day,” he says. “The majority of the hard editing is done later in the studio but every night we’re checking footage, downloading it, organizing it, naming clips and planning. You couldn’t have worked like this ten years ago.

“The video editing’s all in Final Cut Pro,” says Lowell. “I’ve been working with Final Cut since version 1, and I’ve never looked back, never looked sideways.” Lowell discovered even more reasons to like Final Cut Pro while assembling the rich media project. “For this particular project, it was a little different than normal video editing because we’re working with so many still photos. I really like that it’s so easy within Final Cut to work with stills, go out to Photoshop and back, and have the changes reflect in Final Cut.”

For still photography, Rich also deploys an all-digital field workflow anchored by his MacBook Pro. “We do a lot of our editing and basic tonal adjustment after a shoot in Aperture.”

On multiday or multiweek shoots, Rich downloads the pictures to laptops in the field using Aperture and then transfers the backups onto hard drives. “I would say 50% of the process in terms of downloading the assets takes place in the field whether that’s sitting in a tent somewhere, in the mountains, or in a hotel room.” And Rich’s digital workflow extends seamlessly into his studio, a networked Mac-driven office running multiple terminals, Xraid and Xserve.

For Rich, the choice of a Mac-based workflow was simple: “My passion is creating compelling content. What I’m least passionate about is how to use complex tools, whether that’s a camera or a computer. For me, the Mac is the tool that requires the least amount of thinking yet does the most amount of work.”

After years of work planning and producing their first foray into rich media production, both Lowell and Rich are sold on its possibilities. “If there’s really any question among creatives about whether rich media offers an opportunity to tell a story in a new and interesting way that has potentially more power than just a film, a print piece, or an NPR-style audio piece,” says Rich,”I think the answer is, almost unanimously, yes.”

Release The Hound! - An Adventure By Crabbie The Cab Driver

On Friday night, I dropped a woman off at 4th & Everett on the westside, right in the middle of the nexus of clubs in what used to be Chinatown that I try to avoid. This is an area full of drunk and obnoxious people. As I ran her card, a drunk middle-aged white man with sandy blonde hair and a red Hawaiian shirt started asking through the window "Will you take us to Gateway? Will you take us to Gateway?" An obese middle-aged white guy with gray hair was standing behind them on the sidewalk. It was a decent fare, so I told them I'd take them after I was done processing the young woman's card.

They got in, and I got on 84 as they told me all about their big 20th high school reunion. The pudgy guy gave me an address in Clackamas County (not anywhere near Gateway, but a much better trip on the meter). I said sure. He promptly passed out, and started snoring very loudly. The guy in the Hawaiian shirt said that it was going to be very hard to wake the fat guy up, and that I should take them to his place in Gateway. I agreed to do so.

The conscious guy was very amicable, if extremely drunk. He kept telling me how much he loved the jazz we were listening to ("A Love Supreme" on KBOO), and that I seemed like such a nice guy. I got him to his place, and it was about $21 on the meter.

He gave me a debit card, which I ran. It was declined. This was completely confusing to him, proving to him that his card had in fact been declined was like proving to him that gravity didn't exist - his whole world was thrown into disarray.

He didn't have any cash. Did I take the Home Depot card? No. The Meier & Frank card? Sorry son, no dice. "Oh wait, here's one you can use!" He handed me the declined card again - I told him that it probably wasn't going to work any better this time. This routine continued for a good two or three minutes - he'd offer me store credit cards, I'd tell him we didn't take them, and then he'd find his bank card again and offer me that. I turned the meter back on.

Finally he said that he was going to go inside and get cash from his girlfriend. I was a little sketched out by this, but I figured that I had the fat guy for collateral. He then went around the back of the house, which made me more suspicious (suspicions of this not being his house, and him jumping a fence).

I waited - no guy, no lights coming on inside the house. I locked the fat guy in the cab, took my Maglite in hand, and walked around the back of the house. The back door was open, with a little kitchen light on inside. I walked around to the front and knocked - two or three dogs started barking, and I heard someone hushing them, but no answer. More knocking, more barking, but no guy. I tried to rouse the fat guy with various proddings, the flashlight, and a loud tone of voice, but no result whatsoever. I waited a minute or two more, knocked repeatedly at the house, and then called into dispatch.

"So I've got a fat guy passed out and snoring in the back of my cab, and he won't wake up when I tap, poke, or shake him. He had a friend, but the friend's skipped out on the fare. What do I do in this situation?"

(laughter over the radio)

"Wake up the fat guy?" the dispatcher suggests.

"I've shined a flashlight in his face and done everything but punch him in the nose, he's not waking up."

"Well, call the cops."

"On 911? This isn't exactly an emergency."

"Call 911, and tell them the situation."

I did, making it clear to the operator that the fat guy didn't seem to be in any obvious danger. I lit a cigarette, and figured that on a Friday night in this part of town, I was due for a wait. It's worth noting that I was actually in very good humor throughout all of this - I'd been having a good night both financially and personally, and could fully appreciate the absurdity of my situation, and how wonderful it is to have a job where I semi-routinely find myself in situations like this.

Within two minutes three cop cars (one of them a K-9 unit!) and an ambulance squeeled up. This made me even more amused, and I made some cracks about appreciating the support, but not being sure that the situation warranted such an expenditure of my tax dollars. The paramedics thus called off the firetruck that was en route. Apparently whenever there's a report of a suspect fleeing or hiding, the dog gets called.

Anyway, I told the cops what the story was, and the paramedics managed to rouse the fat guy pretty easily, I wish that I'd been paying attention to see what secret paramedic trick they used. The paramedics were really amused by the whole thing - it's hard to capture just how rediculous this guy was, or how drunk. Again, I forgot to employ the camera phone. While the cops knocked on the door and walked around the house, they tested the fat guy's blood sugar, and told him that everything seemed okay, he'd just have a hang-over in the morning. "Okay, good," he said, and promptly climbed back into the backseat and passed out again.

Meanwhile, the two beat cops hadn't found the other guy, so the K-9 guy asked eagerly if he could set the dog loose. This ellicited a big grin and a thumbs up from me, who at this point was mostly interested in seeing just how preposterous the situation could get. The other two cops nodded, and thus the German shephered was set loose.

The dog quickly found the man, who apparently had been squatted in a semi-fetal position in his backyard hedgerow. I was hanging out at the car and didn't get to see it happen, but the two regular cops ushered him out with big smiles on their faces. He didn't seem to understand what was going on or why, and they had to remind him about how he'd taken a cab and owed me money.

"Oh yeah, that's right!" he said. He was still in very good (if confused) humor, and totally amicable. We then went (for the fourth time) through the routine of him offering me the declined debit card, then his store credit cards, this time with the police present. The fat guy was then woken up again, and gotten out of the cab. He didn't have any money either, and kept saying "but he said he would pay for it!" and the other dude kept saying "yeah, yeah, I've got this one."

He then offered me his bank card again, and the cops and I burst out in laughter. The absurdity of their position then seemed to dawn on the two drunk guys, who also started smiling and laughing, and suddenly I felt like I was on a sitcom.

Then the cops started explaining to the two guys about how they had to figure out a way to pay me, or they'd be spending the weekend in jail on theft charges. The two drunk guys didn't seem to grasp the seriousness of this completely and kept laughing, but my mood started to sour slightly as the thought of having to give a statement, deal with this down the road, etc. I tried to tune it out, and let the cops talk to them.

Did I take checks?

No. Certainly not in this situation.

It began to look like the cops really were going to take them to jail, so I suggested an alternative. They could give me something valuable, I would take it into the garage, and they could come down and pay at their leisure, and then receive the valuable back. There are actually company policies and laws surrounding the custody of valuables in lieu of fare, and though it's a pain in the ass for everyone, it does work. If the item isn't claimed in 90 days, then the driver gets to keep it.

The cop seemed very appreciative to have had this out supplied, and talked it up to the guy.

"That's perfect! I know just the thing!" he said excitedly, "You can take my dog!"

I laughed loudly. "I can't be taking your dog, yo. I'm working until seven in the morning, and it wouldn't be very happy at the garage." The cops, at this point, were not even giving the slightest pretense of straight faces.

"But you know I'll come and get my dog tomorrow if I give it to you!"

"Man, I certainly hope so, but I ain't taking the dog. How about like a T.V. or something?"

"You want my T.V.?" the look of horror on his face suggested that I'd just asked for his first-born.

"It's a good idea, sir," said the cop.

"Okay, I'll go get my T.V."

He did, and it made a good story to entertain the family on their way to the airport that was my next fare (I would, of course, catch a very rare 3 AM Saturday morning airporter on the same night I had a television taking up half of my trunk).

I didn't wake up in time to get a cab Saturday, so I have no idea whether or not the guy came in with his money to claim the television.

Treasure Found - Ancient Gold Treasure Puzzles Greek Archaeologists

ATHENS, Greece - A priceless gold wreath has been unearthed in an ancient city in northern Greece, buried with human bones in a large copper vase that workers initially took for a land mine.
The University of Thessaloniki said in a statement Friday that the "astonishing" discovery was made during its excavations this week in the ruins of ancient Aigai. The city was the first capital of ancient Macedonia, where King Philip II — father of Alexander the Great — was assassinated.
Gold wreaths are rare and were buried with ancient nobles or royalty. But the find is also highly unusual as the artifacts appear to have been removed from a grave during ancient times and, for reasons that are unclear, reburied in the city's marketplace near the theater where Philip was stabbed to death.
"This happened quite soon after the original burial; it's not that a grave robber took it centuries later and hid it with the intention of coming back," excavator Chryssoula Saatsoglou-Paliadeli told The Associated Press. "It probably belonged to a high-ranking person."
The "impressively large" copper vessel contained a cylindrical golden jar with a lid, with the gold wreath of oak leaves and the bones inside.
"The young workman who saw it was astounded and shouted 'land mine!'" the university statement said.
Saatsoglou-Paliadeli, a professor of archaeology at the university, said the find probably dates to the 4th century B.C., during which Philip and Alexander reigned.
"Archaeologists must explain why such a group ... was found outside the extensive royal cemetery," the university statement said. "(They must also) work out why the bones of the unknown — but by no means insignificant — person were hidden in the city's most public and sacred area."
During the 4th century B.C., burials outside organized cemeteries were very uncommon.
In a royal cemetery at Vergina, just west of Aigai, Greek archaeologists discovered a wealth of gold and silver treasure in 1977. One of the opulent graves, which contained a large gold wreath of oak leaves, is generally accepted to have belonged to Philip II. The location of Alexander's tomb is one of the great mysteries of archaeology.
The sprawling remains of a large building with banquet halls and ornate mosaics at Aigai — some 520 kilometers (320 miles) north of Athens — has been identified as Philip's palace.
Aigai flourished in the 6th and 5th centuries B.C., attracting leading Greek artists such as the poet Euripides, who wrote his last tragedies there. The Macedonian capital was moved to Pella in the 4th century B.C., and Aigai was destroyed by the Romans in 168 B.C.
